There are a number of books on Littleborough but 2 are mentioned here:

The story of Littleborough by John Street. Now out of print -Try Kelsall’s bookshop in Littleborough Square

A PENNINE PIONEER by ALLEN HOLT

The Summit Tunnel is regarded as one of George Stephenson's greatest engineering achievements. It runs for over a mile and a half through the Calder Valley between Walsden (now in Yorkshire) and Littleborough (in Lancashire) and was opened for public transport on 1st March, 1841. It is widely regarded as an extra-ordinary piece of work, and Allen Holt presents it as such, comprehensively detailing every stage in its development. He covers subjects such as the surveying, the tunnelling techniques, the sourcing of materials, the locomotives used, the different railway carriages used, the costs, the role of the navvy etc etc, with an interesting tailpiece about the fire on December 1984. For any railway historian or amateur enthusiast, or student of social and industrial history, this is a thoroughly engaging account.
