Having been involved in passenger transport for most of my working life and lectured on Transport History and in the present day (albeit now a few years ago) I appreciate how important it is to the modern world and how frustrating it can be for travellers. But, things were little different in the past,  with complaints about the state of the roads, the slow speed of the canals yet they were cheap especially compared with the railways. Fast and efficient but expensive. Even millowners would travel 3rd class, initially in open carriages. The First World War help transform motorised road transport, especially freight, which never looked becoming dominant today.

 

Littleborough benefitted from all of these improvements which is  why there are numerous pages each mode of Transport including roads, Passenger services and vehicles, Canals and Railways including industrial railways.

Whilst the pages carry numerous pictures, the Littleborough Historical Society's Archive include many more featuring the Camera of Richard Greenwood, Ian holt Alwyn Smith, John Sagar, Terry Ryder, Lynne Priestly and Myself.
